But Tate can’t stop thinking about Abby and the moment she discovers he is pregnant with his child, he refuses to let her go through it alone and, desperately wanting to do the right thing, he takes her home to his ranch and gets her to agree to marrying him. Tate’s financee is the spoiled, bratty daughter of the richest man in town and is constantly cheating on Tate and breaking up with him- which is what led to the fight right before the night he got drunk. Problem is, Tate has a finacee and she is the dirt-poor daughter of the town whore. In a small town, six weeks after having a drunken one night stand with Tate, a guy she has secretly loved for a long time, Abby finds out she is pregnant. It has refreshingly smart and functional characters (both individually and as a couple), funny witty dialogue, a steamy romance, some misty eyed moments (but no crying), some moments that made me laugh out loud, a writing style that just sucks you right into the story and allows you to vividly picture everything that is happening, as well as a very sweet happy ending □ Allred’s writing that I just had to try another of her books and LOVED this one too! “You’ll have the words every day for the rest of our lives.”Īfter finishing The Sweet Gum Tree, I fell so in love with Ms. ![]()

The Italian manuscript's story, it was claimed, derived from a story still older, dating back perhaps as far as the Crusades. He employed an archaic style of writing to further reinforce this. This "ancient Catholic family" is possibly the Percy family, as Walpole would have known the Duke of Northumberland and his wife Elizabeth Percy, though this is not proven. This first edition purported to be a translation based on a manuscript printed at Naples in 1529 and recently rediscovered in the library of "an ancient Catholic family in the north of England". Strangely, though, the end result is almost too slick. The fact that the hero on the run is under 18 adds an interesting dimension: checking into hotels and finding modes of transport are that much harder than for an adult fugitive (though a pre-"chip-and-pin"-age setting helps). In this respect, I've little doubt that he achieved everything he set out to do. He builds up the sympathy for his fugitive, Robert, cranks up the tension and paints his characters with consummate skill. You know the sort: adventures where, more often than not, the pursuers are those who framed the protagonist in the first place or, worse still, have committed the crime they're publicly accusing him of. I suspect many a potential reader has been fed a film and television diet of the wrongly accused on the run.
